  • Confusing People With God Again?

    "But Jesus, on His part,

was not entrusting Himself to them,

    for He knew all men,

and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man,

for He Himself knew what was in man."

    John 2:24, 25

Relationships can be the source of much pain or joy.  To truly love, the way God loves will mean a chance for probable pain.  Some pain can be avoided though.  Sometimes we put too much into relationships.  We rely too much on other's to hold us up.  For example in John 2:24, we see that Jesus entrusted Himself to no man.  The word "entrusting" in the Greek is the word "pisteuō" meaning: place confidence in, think to be true.

One time the Lord whispered into my heart, "Child, I need you to release people to be people and Me to be God".  Stop thinking people are going to act like God all the time.  Give grace and mercy to humankind.

Why did Jesus not entrust Himself to other human beings?  Why didn't he place confident trust in another soul?  I like how The Message version of the next verse reads:

"He knew them inside and out,

    knew how untrustworthy they were.

He didn't need any help in seeing right through them."

    ************

Folks, let's face it....we are all untrustworthy to carry another man's soul.  None of us can perfectly relate to others 100% of the time.  Sometime, somewhere, I am going to knowingly or unknowingly hurt someone. That's just the truth of the matter.

This doesn't mean that we can't know someone intimately.  But our ultimate trust....the kind of trust that only God is deserving of, must always be pointed towards Him.  When we can do this, we can become more forgiving when others "fall off the pedistol" that we have placed them on!

Get people off the pedestal and keep God there alone.  He is a jealous God and will not share your greatest affections with another.

God is the only One that will never leave you or forsake you.  God is the only One that won't blab your business all over the place.  God is the only One that can comfort you like no other.  God is the only One who is storing your tears in His bottle.  God is the only One with Whom you can do all things.  God is the only One whom without, you can do nothing.  God is the One who says when you are born and when you die.  Getting the picture?  Who on earth has a best friend like this?  No one can compare.

The word "knew" in the Greek is the word "ginōskō".

This word implies great intimacy with others.  So....there's a difference between knowing someone intimately and entrusting myself to them in an unhealthy way.  You can know someone well, but how dependent are you upon them?  Am I walking a healthy boundary as I relate to them?  Am I laying things upon them that I should only be laying on my Heavenly Father?

I am convinced that there is a deep inner part of us that is like the "Holy of Holies" place in our heart, that is to be given only to God Himself.  And when we prostitute this part of our being, we're giving away something holy and sacred to one who has the capacity to use and abuse, just because they are simply a card carrying member of the human race!

To love another as God has called us to will not mean a life without pain and disappointment.  God Himself shows a history of pain and disappointment over His people.  Just read the Old Testament!

But....we can decrease the pain and disappointment when we understand and walk in the healthy boundaries the Word has laid out for us.  Our prime example is Jesus in these couple of verses in John.

We were made with a capacity and need to worship.  The enemy of our soul would love nothing better than to get our eyes off of the One we are to worship and on to another soul or thing in this earth.  Satan would love nothing better than to entrap us and entice us into soul ties with other people.  Ties that were meant strictly to be between us and our Creator.
